One Year Down

Today is the one year anniversary of my arrival at post. In the past year, I have adjudicated 13,758 visas. To celebrate, I took the day off and went to the Osaka Aquarium.

It was all very peaceful. Except for the killer snowcrabs.

Number one indication of having spent too much time in Japan: at the aquarium, you realize you've consumed over half of the animals on display. And that whaleshark is looking pretty tasty.

A whale shark was recently found near Oahu. Quite an impressive animal, but nothing about it made me want to take a bite! There is that assessment of you that you will eat ANYthing! 8^)

PS-I need measurements!!

Love,
mom

I sent the cellphone pictures to one of my Japanese friends, too. His response:

たこの足はおいしそう。お酒のおつまみですね。

"The octopus legs look delicious. They'd go nicely with some sake."

Which is funny, since it's just what I was thinking when I was taking the picture... Really, in this country, it's less of an aquarium, and more of a menu.

Notice how I haven't acknowledged your request for measurements... Karyn and I are still trying to work out a way in which it looks as if we didn't forget that you had asked for them.

Your second year will speed by and before you know it, you'll be knee-deep in packout and arrangements for Home Leave.

13,000 visas is more than my entire post did last year all together.

Visa work can be interesting (for me the fraud was the interesting part), but yea, the daily grind is not what I joined the FS for. And I'm an ENTJ.
